Parallels of Love

The setting sun over the vast Las Vegas desert shimmered on the buildings as it began to set. Another day had passed in the city that is a world all on its own. Today had been a quiet day in the hustle and bustle of everyday life there. Samuel McKartlyn was walking along the sidewalk he had walked for the last year. He had come to Vegas on a whim when his uncle was opening a casino, The Golden Wheel, and had needed someone to manage it.

Samuel entered the casino and scanned the crowed like he did every day. Today was different though. Today he spotted a woman with long red hair and the most beautiful green eyes he’d ever seen. He’d know those eyes anywhere and as he made his way over to her, all he could think about was how much he was in love with this woman.

When he reached her, her back was towards him, “Well if it isn’t Mary Whitman.”

The woman turned to him and forced a smile. “Sam...” Mary stood there for a moment lost in the man’s eyes. “You look well. Are you here on vacation?”

Staring at Mary, Samuel couldn’t remember why the two of them had broken up. “No, I run this place.”

“I didn’t think you’d ever leave Lafayette,” Mary mumbled.

“My uncle needed my help, and I always wanted to break free.”

Mary’s heart ached at the words her former lover had spoken. It hadn’t been so long ago when she’d needed him and offered a way out. He’d told her no. Now, here he was far from the life she thought he could never leave behind.

A man walked up behind Mary and grabbed her waist causing her jump. “I’m sorry dear, I didn’t mean to make you jump.” He gave her a quick kiss on the cheek.

“It’s okay Marc. I was just talking to...” Mary looked between the two men. “Marc this is Sam. He runs the casino.”

“Oh...” Was all Marc could say before the child in the stroller he was pushing began to fuss. “I’m going to take Christy for a walk, and hopefully get her to sleep for you.”

“Alright. Have fun, and be careful” Mary gave both Marc and Christy a kiss, before both left her side.

Samuel smiled to himself. “She yours?”

Mary nodded as she watched Marc and Christy leave.

“How old is she?”

Mary turned her focus back to Samuel. She hated where this was going, surely he knew who the baby was. He couldn’t have forgotten so soon.

“Ten months tomorrow.” Mary looked down at her watch quickly. “I should go; I have a busy day tomorrow.”

Samuel did a quick calculation in his head as Mary started to walk away. When he realized when the child would’ve been conceived, he got angry. “She belongs to me, doesn’t she?” He stared at Mary with hardness in his eyes.

“No Sam. She doesn’t belong to you. She’s not property.” Mary shook her head in disgust as she walked away from him.

“That’s not what I meant and you know it.” Samuel rushed after her and grabbed her arm to turn her around. “Christy is my daughter, isn’t she?”

Mary couldn’t believe this. The nerve of him wanting claim on the child now. Now after he shut them both out. Now after he had signed away all rights to Christy and she herself had long moved on with her life. “Biologically , yes. Emotionally, no. In our separation agreement you signed all future rights away of her.”

“That’s not fair. I want to be able to see her! It’s my right as her father!” Samuel shouted causing people to stop and watch the scene played out before them.

“You’re not getting this Sam. You are not now, and will never be, her father! I think of you as a sperm donor. I won’t allow you to hurt her like you hurt me.” Mary gave Samuel a smug look before walking away once again.

Samuel shook his head. “Walk away, that’s what you’re good at!”

Mary stopped in her tracks. “You know what Sam, I’m so over you. You want to play the hurt victim in this, fine, whatever. But just remember you’re the one who showed me the door and shut it behind me so don’t stand there and act hurt.”

“I’ll sue you for custody and when I get it I’ll make sure you never see her again! Then you’ll pay for keeping her from me.” Samuel gave Mary a smug smile as he walked past her.

“Try to take her from me and you’ll be sorry Sam.” Mary blurted as he walked away.

Hours passed and Samuel’s co-workers were getting worried because none had seen him in a few hours. He hadn’t answered any pages or taken any phone calls. They started to get a bad feeling and sent a security guard, Buddy James, to his office- the last place he was seen.

Upon entering the room Buddy noticed Samuel’s lifeless body, his head against his desk and a pool of blood at his feet. Mr. James had been in Vegas long enough to know if you find a dead body to leave it alone and call the cops. So that’s what he did.

It didn’t take too long before the police showed up along with Grissom, Nick, and Catherine. While the investigators processed the scene, Brass interviewed some potential witnesses.

In the office, the three CSIs were going over the scene. Catherine noticed a piece of paper on the floor next to Samuel’s body. She bent down to get a closer look. “Someone wasn’t over someone.” Catherine snapped a few photos a letter lying on the floor next to their vic and then turned to Grissom for a moment. “Dearest Mary, I know you said you’ve moved on but truth be told, I haven’t. For a long time I thought I had until I saw you today. Looking into your eyes brought back all those feelings and I found this quote on how I feel about you: ‘I thought that by telling myself and everyone else that I hated you, that sooner or later I would come to believe it. But I now realize that by lying, it makes me want you even more.’ … That’s where it ends.”

The rest of the processing was uneventful. When they were finished with the scene and getting ready to head back to the lab, Brass found them and explained they might already have a suspect, and she was working in the entertainment room at the very moment. Grissom and Catherine asked Nick to take the evidence back to the lab while they went to speak with the woman. about her knowledge of Samuel’s death.

When they found Miss Whitman, she was in the center of the room speaking to another woman. Both seemed to be talking about the stage area and the seating around the front of the stage. Both women were showing each other papers stuck to clip boards, and neither saw the trio approach.

“Miss Whitman.” Catherine spoke as she Grissom and Brass walked up behind her.

“Yes?” Mary turned around looking at the three of them. “Can I help you with something?”

“I’m Captain Brass and this is Gil Grissom and Catherine Willows from the crime lab. We’d like to ask you a few questions about Samuel McKartlyn.”

Mary’s face turned red with anger, she couldn’t believe he had the nerve to call the cops on her. “I cannot believe him. He’s...he’s”

“He’s dead.” Brass finished Mary’s sentence.

“What?” Mary shook her head, thinking she heard incorrectly. “What are you talking about?”

“He was found in his office, a letter opener plunged through his heart.” Catherine explained to her. “Is there something you know about it?”

“No...one moment.”

Mary turned to her co-worker and motioned to her that she was stepping away for a moment and to carry on. After that, she led the trio to a table and chairs on the far side of the room.

“How well did you know the victim?” Brass asked.

“I thought I knew him very well, but after seeing him yesterday and speaking to him, I don’t think I ever really knew him.” Mary looked Brass deep in the eyes, for she had nothing to hide.

“Witnesses heard you threaten him.” Grissom told the girl.

Mary stared at them in shock. “And yet they didn’t hear him threaten me? What kind of witnesses are those?”

“You kept him from his daughter.” Grissom stated to the young woman sitting across from him.

Mary rolled her eyes and snorted. “Me keep him from his daughter? Me! He kept himself from his daughter. He got so wrapped up in not wanting to take a leap of faith with me...he nearly made me jump alone. For many years I felt as if I was drowning in an ocean of emotion and many times I felt he would just stand of the shore and watch me as I went under. Then other times, he would pull me out of the strong current long enough to breathe before letting me go again.

“We had been together for two years when it happened...One night after work I was attacked by a man with a gun. He beat, raped, and robbed me and then left me for dead in that alley buried underneath garbage.” The memory of that night brought a wave of tears to her eyes. “It’s the worst feeling of all to lose control of what’s happening to you. After that, I felt lost, and it just got worse day by day. Finally one day I couldn’t do it anymore. I stopped caring, I couldn’t sleep and I felt as if I was going to...I felt like if I didn’t get away, I’d kill myself. So I left, leaving him a note telling him why I had to go.” Her words caught in her throat as she carried on. I felt bad doing that, but I knew if I was to tell him in person, he’d ask me to say and I knew I wasn’t strong enough to say no.” She turned her head trying to make the tears go away. “I wanted to turn back so many times- to run into his arms, for him to hold me tight but I knew leaving would only make us stronger in the long run.”

“So that’s when you found out you were pregnant?” Catherine asked Mary.

“No...” Mary wiped more tears from her eyes. “I got news one day that his brother was working an undercover job and was killed by a drive by shooting. I went back there to support him. I mean, technically, we were still together. A few days after the funeral I noticed he was starting to get into a deep depression. I wanted him to go away with me, to escape. He thought it was ridiculous and said no, he needed to be there for his family. He didn’t even want to leave in the future. Then that night we were watching a show and the guy on it made some stupid cryptic comment to his girlfriend on how he doesn’t want to be with her anymore and she should just leave him because for all she went through for him he didn’t have the balls to break it off himself. Sam said something along the lines of ‘I know how he feels’. Do you know what it’s like to love someone? You’d do anything for them and they tell you to leave? It hurt. I felt as if my life with him had been wasted.”

“So you left again.” Catherine stated with a snarkiness to her voice.

“He wanted me to and I knew I couldn’t stay there- the memories and pain were still there. I could feel them around my throat and I felt I didn’t have a choice other than leaving. I had been gone for nearly two months when I found out I was pregnant. Sam and I were at arms then. We had been living together and a lot of the things in the apartment we bought together along with bringing some of our own things into it. After I left we started fighting over things, and we got our lawyers involved and they were asking us what we wanted. It took them three months get him to let me have what I wanted and I just wanted my personal effects, photos, books, CDs, and that stuff.” Mary smiled thinking about her daughter. “And I wanted the baby. I included a letter to him, telling him I was sorry we had to end things like this and I wished things could’ve been different. I told him about his child and if he wanted to see the baby I wouldn’t stop him and we could work something out, but if he didn’t then to sign the papers I was including in the property settlement...Sam signed the papers. He signed away all his rights to her. There were times even after the papers were signed I went call him and tell him about the baby. I would dial his number only to hang up with only one number left to dial. When I first felt the baby move I was so excited and called him, it wasn’t until I heard his voice on the other line until I realized what I had done and what I needed to do. He didn’t want me or the baby, so...”

“You moved on.” Grissom stated, not looking at Mary.

“I had to, if not for my sake, for Christy’s. I couldn’t expose her to his definition of love. I couldn’t take the risk of him loving her the way he did me. I could take it, but a child would never understand. I warned him if he didn’t get it together and figure out what he wanted he would be too late. And he was.”

Catherine rolled her eyes as she looked at the woman across from her. “So what, he comes back and wants to have a life with his daughter and you’re afraid and kill him?”

Mary shook her head, “I didn’t kill him. I’d never do that to Christy. One day she might want to know who he is...was. If I were to kill him then she would hate me forever.” She looked to the back of the room and saw Marc holding Christy, watching her. “If we’re done here, I have business to get to.”

“Go ahead.” Grissom shrugged finally looking Mary in the eyes.

Both Catherine and Grissom watched as the woman walked to the back of the room, wiping her face free of tears.”

“What do you think? You think she did it?” Catherine turned to Grissom who seemed to be in his own world.

“People do stupid things for the ones they love. But our vic was a casino manager, I'm sure he had more dangerous enemies than a former lover looking for revenge. Someone could’ve seen the argument between the two of them and staged this to look like a non-professional hit to cover their tracks. Look into it and let me know what you find out.” Grissom shook his head as he stood up.

“Okay.” Catherine said as Grissom walked away from her. She knew what her friend needed to do and she wished him well.

After Grissom reached the back of the room he pulled his cell phone out of his jacket pocket. His fingers hovered over the numbers for a moment before dialling. Her voice on the other line nearly made him melt. ‘Has it always been that sweet?’ He thought to himself.

Shaking his head he cleared his throat. “Hey...please don’t hang up, just listen. I’m sorry. I’m taking full blame in this, okay? I’m giving Ecklie a month’s notice and then I’d like to join you...for however long you want me. And Sara, I...” Grissom swallowed hard, knowing she needed to hear it just as much as he needed to tell her, “I love you.”

A/N 2 This was writen for the summer blockbuster challenge. Yes I know its long over due, but RL got crazy with health issues then my computer crashed. I wasn't going to give up and I do hope you enjoy it.
The Stokes family have a secret. And it all began two weeks after Nick and his twin sister were born.

7pm September 1st 1971

P.J. Nelson sneered as he looked at the house. He hated William Stokes with every fibre of his being. The thought of William being happy repulsed him. The sound of children laughing made his hands clench in anger. It wasn’t fair. He only had one child and this D.A. was leading the charge to make sure he never saw his kid again. Then to add insult to injury, the big and powerful lawyer gets to go home to his loving wife and eight children. That was wrong on so many levels. Now it was time to pay the piper; an eye for an eye or in this case, a son for a son.

P.J. groaned as he walked up the stairs to the home. Mr. Stokes could keep his ranch, his large home, his fancy cars, and his perfect family. All P.J. wanted was his own kid. And the only person standing in his way needed to be taught a lesson; a lesson that would have dire consequences if not paid attention to.

He stopped at the door and noticed a sign, obviously made by a child. He shook his head as he read: Toto, I've got a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore. The whole idea of not only a themed birthday party but a costume party in September blew his mind. No, take that back, it make him even sicker. That damn D.A. had enough money to spoil all his children.

He stepped inside the door and looked around the room. Relatives and friends of the family were dressed in their Wizard of Oz best. The room was decorated in bright colors. The floor even had glitter covered yellow rectangles made out of construction paper. All this for the two oldest Stokes tenth birthday- Rebekah and Patricia, the first set of twins.

A man around his age walked up to him and smiled. “Hey man, nice costume!”

“Thanks.” P.J. smiled back at the guy. His costume had been difficult to make. Since he had known about the party, he had struggled to come up with the right character to dress as so he could easily go through with his plan without anyone noticing. Finally it was his partner in crime who came up with the idea and helped build the costume.

The costume was simple for the most part. Gray pants, shirt, and shoes matched perfectly with the metal hat and round body plate. His buddy made the body plate easy to remove with enough space to fit a baby inside without anyone noticing.

P.J. watched everyone. When they were distracted by other things going on in the room, he walked up the stairs.

He looked down the hall, wondering what room held his prize. He was relieved some of the doors had name plates on them. He snorted when he saw a door with small two teddy bear name plates on it. One was pink with the name Abigail written on it and the other was blue bearing the name Nicholas.

He quietly opened the door and walked in, shutting it behind him. He took the body plate off and placed it on the floor. Under the body plate, he wore a baby sling. He pulled it off as he looked around the room. Seeing the changing table he walked over and placed the sling on it.

P.J.’s attention went the crib nearest the door and he walked over to look in it. As he peered in, he saw both babies lying there. He started to panic when he realized he couldn’t tell what one was the boy. Neither of them wore blue or pink, but instead one wore a white and brown striped nightie with brown teddies on it, while the other wore a white and yellow stripped nightie with yellow ducks on it. The only difference was the baby in the duck outfit had more hair. It was also the baby that was awake and trying to get to its hand, which was covered in some type of mitt.

When the baby in the duck outfit started fussing, P.J. had to make a decision and quickly. He thought back to his son when he was a baby. His son didn’t have much hair and was quiet. He also thought about his sister’s kids. Both were girls and when they were babies both born with a head full of hair, and both were fussy. Well, fussier than his son he thought.

He gently took the baby in the teddy bear outfit and placed it into the sling and placed the sling on. He pulled a ransom note from his pocket and placed it where the baby had been lying moments ago. Then he quickly placed his costume back on and walked out the bedroom door. Adrenaline began to pump as he softly walked down the stairs. One by one he got closer to the door and closer to freedom, closer to his plot to make Mr. Stokes pay for his crimes. He was on the last step when he was stopped.

“Excuse me; nobody is supposed to be upstairs.”

P.J. took a deep breath and turned to face William Stokes himself. “I’m sorry, I...couldn’t find the bathroom.”

“It’s off of the laundry room. There are signs pointing the way.” William pointed to one of the signs.

“I cannot believe I missed that, thanks.” P.J. turned to head to towards the bathroom as William started up the stairs.”

“Wait!” William walked back down the stairs and looked at P.J. “Do I know you?”

“I...I’m James, your niece Jane’s boyfriend. She got held up at her job and said to just meet her here. I’m sorry, I thought it would be okay.” P.J. glanced over at the door and saw more people come in. “If you would rather I wait outside for her , I will.”

“No, that’s fine, enjoy the party.” William shook his head.

P.J watched as William disappeared up the stairs and he made a dash to the door.

Upstairs William noticed the door to the nursery was slightly open. He went over to it and heard one of the babies whining. He walked into the room to comfort his child. He looked in the crib and only saw one of the babies in it. ‘That’s odd; I thought Jilly put them together for awhile.’ He shook his head thinking he must’ve heard Jillian wrong.

“Shhh shhh Nick, you don’t want to wake your sister.” William picked his child up and held him close. “What’s this?” He picked up the paper that lay in his son’s crib.

A son for a son is what I take. You give me mine and I’ll give you yours. But if you fail, you’ll not see yours again.... ALIVE!

P.J. Nelson

William stood in shock before it suddenly clicked that the man he had seen was PJ. But he didn’t have Nick. “Abigail...” He rushed to the other crib to see it empty. “Oh no!”

He ran from the room still holding Nick close to him. When he got down stairs his mom was near the door. “Mom, take him.” He passed the baby over and ran out the door.

“Bill! Son, what is it?!” Vera Stokes called out to her son as he ran.

Outside William looked around and noticed a man running down the drive of their ranch. “STOP!” He ran after the man. His feet pounded against the ground as he fought to catch up to the guy who could possibly have taken his baby girl.

William stopped in his tracks when he saw the man get into a car, then speed away. He stood there and watched the lights fade away before heading back to the house. He didn’t know how he was going to tell his wife. And he feared for the safety of his daughter. Once P.J. realized his mistake, William feared P.J. would...

8pm September 1st, 1971

In the middle of nowhere, a car sped down a dirt path towards an old wooden shack. The driver’s knuckles turned white as he tightly gripped the stirring wheel. “P.J. are you sure we’re doing the right thing? There has to be another way.”

P.J. turned to his brother and sneered, “Like what little brother? Talk to him? He ain’t gonna hear a thing I say. If he won’t give me Sunny, well, he’ll be sorry.”

Steven hated that he was involved in this. He hadn’t agreed to do any of these things. All P.J. had asked him to do was to drive him to the home so he could have a talk with William Stokes. To talk, that was all he claimed he wanted to do. PJ explained that crashing the costume party would make it easier for him to talk to Mr. Stokes. Steven had thought it was a bad idea, but in hindsight he thought it was all to help his brother. When his brother got into the car with the baby, he panicked and drove off.

Steven was trying to think of what to do next. He now realized how sick his brother was, and he feared if he couldn’t get the baby away from P.J., his brother would kill it. P.J. was gone to him. His once blue eyes were now black with hatred, and Steven hated himself for being sucked into his brother’s madness.

Once the car was stopped P.J. turned to his brother, “Thanks for the ride, bro. I’ll see you around.” P.J. exited the car and walked inside the building, slamming the door behind him.

Steven waited until it was clear before he reached under his seat and pulled out a gun. He made sure it was loaded before getting out of the car. As he walked towards the house he slipped the weapon in his pants and covered it with his jacket. He took a deep breath before walking in.

“What you still doing here?” P.J. looked at his brother .

“I want to make sure you don’t do anything stupid.” Steven shut the door behind him. He looked around the tiny space and cringed. The cabin consisted of a small kitchen, a living space and a bed on the far wall next to a door that lead to a tiny bathroom.

“Thanks for the support.” P.J. walked to the bed and placed the baby on it. “Why don’t you make me a sandwich? Stuff’s in the fridge.”

Steven shook his head in disgust and walked to the kitchen. He made P.J. a sandwich as he watched his brother from the corner of his eye. ‘When he’s asleep, I’ll take the baby back,’ he thought.

As P.J. looked at the baby he noticed the blanket had initials on it - pink initials. “Shit!”

“What?”

“This….this baby isn’t going to help! It’s the girl. He’s not going to care about the girl.” P.J. stood up and paced the floor. “She has to die. She has to.” He walked over to the baby and grabbed the pillow on the bed. .

“Don’t!” Steven pulled out the gun and pointed it his brother.

P.J. laughed as he pressed the pillow down on the baby. “You won’t shoot me”

</b>10pm September 3rd 1971</b>

Officer Robert Groundsmond took a deep breath as he and his rookie partner stepped onto the porch. The two men gave each other a quick glance before Robert knocked on the door.

Vera Stokes opened the door. Seeing the two police officers made her drop her head. She knew something was wrong, she could see it on their faces.

“We need to speak to Mr. and Mrs. Stokes, please.” Robert told Vera as he took his hat off.

“Yes, of course,” she stepped back allowing the men to enter the house. “They’re right in here.” Vera motioned towards the living room.

“Bill, Jillian...” Vera came walked over and stood next to the sofa where her son and daughter-in-law were sitting.

“Umm…” Officer Brown struggled to figure out what to say. It was his first time doing something like this and it was tearing him apart.

“We need you to identify something.” Officer Groundsmond reached into a paper bag and pulled out a plastic bag and held it out for William and Jillian.

Jillian reached out with trembling hands and took the bag. Her eyes filled with tears as she looked at its contents. A once white knitted baby blanket was now stained red. On the corner were the soft pink initials, ALS now a deep crimson. Her whole body began to shake as she traced the letters with her finger. “Abby...”

“I’m sorry.” Officer Groundsmond held back his emotions. He had never gotten used to this part of the job. “We don’t have a body. It...we don’t think there will ever be one.”

“What do you mean?” William asked the officer.

“Well...the blanket was found by a wooded area.” Officer Brown explained. Three sets of eyes were fixed on him. He knew the family had a lot of emotions going through their minds. Shaking his head he looked down at the ground. “Please don’t make me say it.”

William pulled his wife into a hug and held her close. He couldn’t think of what he could say to comfort her. There were no words or actions that could make it better. Their baby girl more than likely suffered at the jaws of a wild animal.

“Is there a chance the blood could be...what if it’s not hers, and she’s alive somewhere?” Vera asked with a shaky voice.

“There’s no way to tell that right now...maybe one day,” Officer Groundsmond told her.

“Please tell me you found that bastard, P.J. Nelson.” William asked the officers.

“We found his car about four hours ago. We received a call saying there was an accident and when we got there we found it was wrapped around a tree and engulfed in flames. There was only one body found in it. We believed it to be his,” Officer Brown said. “We’ve spoken to his brother and he told us about a shack of P.J’s. We found the blanket in the woods around that home.”

William held onto Jillian as they both cried. He felt as if someone had reached into his chest and pulled out his heart. Tears fell from his eyes as he and his wife held each other.

1pm September 6th 1971

Jillian stood at the doorway to the living room, holding Nick. A sea of people dressed in black threatened to drown her. She walked through the room holding the baby closer to her. She walked by her husband as he headed for the stairs.

William sighed as he watched his wife disappear up the stairs to the second floor of the home. “Excuse me.”

He pardoned himself before following after his wife. His whole body was numb as he walked up the stairs and down the hall. He knew Jillian would be in their bedroom. “Jilly?” He entered the room to see her lying on the bed with the baby next to her. “How are you holding up?” He saw a few tears start slipping down her face. “Me too.” He walked over and took a seat on the bed with his wife and son.

“I’ve been thinking...I don’t want him to ever know about what happened. I don’t want him growing up thinking it was his fault. I won’t have him doing that.” Jillian started to sob as she caressed her son’s cheeks.

“I agree,” he shook his head. He didn’t want his son to grow up with this hanging over his head. He thought it would be better for everyone if they just kept it quiet. “I’ll talk to the family in a couple weeks.”

And so it came to pass, Nick Stokes grew into a man who never knew the truth. He never knew he was a twin, and that his twin had been killed. However, things would change when a death in the family would blow the top off this secret and the events that would come afterwards would change everyone’s lives forever.

So with all the smack about LH I thought I'd see where my muse took me. Well she took me somewhere, let me know what you think.

Here's what I have so far on this fic. Are you interested? Should I continue? What do you think? (I haven't edited it yet).

The morning sun began to rise as a woman dressed in black steeped up onto the sidewalk outside of the police station. In her arms she held a baby wrapped in a pink blanket and held tightly to her body. She sighed looking up at the door. Her eyes were red and swollen from the tears she couldn’t seem to stop from flowing. She didn’t want to do what she was there to do, but she knew she had to- it was the only way. She took a few deep breaths before walking towards the door.

Before she could get to the door, a man came out and nearly bumped into her.

“Excuse me.” She fought to find her words. “Are you...do...I mean do you work here?”

“Captain Jim Brass.” Brass looked at the woman who had tears streaming down her face again. “Are you okay? Is there something I can help you with?”

“Yes...I’d like..” She pulled back the bundle she held tightly in her arms. “I’d like to give her for safe keeping.” She reluctantly passed the baby over to Brass.

“She’s beautiful.” Brass looked at the woman who stood across from him. “Are you sure? If I can help you in someway... why don’t you come into my office and talk.”

“No...” She shook her head as she dropped her eyes to the ground. “Look she’s my cousin and my god-daughter. My aunt was murdered last week and...I don’t think I can keep Christina safe. I know her father is...well, use to be a CSI here.” She wipped her eyes and looked back up at Brass. “Please help keep her safe. There’s letters in this bag that has information on her father and mother, the birth her medical information, and there’s clothes and everything she’ll need for a few days.” She passed the bag over to Brass.

“Can you tell me your name?”

“I’m sorry I need to go.” The lady took off running and out of sight.

Brass stood there for a moment before heading back inside. As he walked down the hall he couldn’t help but to keep his eyes on the sleeping child. He felt as if he knew her. He took his eyes off the baby for a moment and saw Catherine walking down the hall.

“Hey Jim, I was...” Catherine stopped short when she noticed the baby in his arms. “Another drop off? How many does this make this month you’ve been given- nine?”

“Something like that, but...this was different.” Brass motioned for Catherine to follow him into his office. Once the door closed behind them, he passed the baby over to his co-worker. “I have a bad feeling about this drop off.”

“What do you mean?”

“She said the father use to work here and she said there’s a note in here with the parent’s information and about her.” Brass put the bag up on his desk and started to look through it. “She just seemed to love this baby so much and it was hurting her to give her up, it’d different from the others.”

“Wait, it wasn’t the mother?” Catherine sat up straight and looked at Brass.

“She said her mother was murdered and she was the baby’s godmother.” Brass pulled out a envelope and showed it to Catherine. “Her name is Christina Emily.”

“She’s a sweety.”

Brass took a seat next to Catherine as he pulled out the papers. “Okay little girl it says here you mommy and daddy are....” When his eyes went over the names of the baby’s parents his mouth dropped and he turned white.

“Jim? Jim what is it? Do we know her father?”

“Not just her father. It says here Christina’s biological parents are...” Brass paused for a moment, “Sara Sidle and Gil Grissom.”

“What?!” Catherine looked at Brass in shock. “Did he ever mention anything about Sara being pregnant to you?”

“No.” Brass sat back and shook his head. “What about you?”

“No?” Catherine looked down at the Hannah. “Who’s going to...Oh my god Jim, if Sara her mother then that means...”

“I know.” Brass stood up and walked over to his desk. “This is not going to be an easy call.”

“It never is.”
